課程概述

彈性穩定學是一門非線性力學的學科。你學?的力?例如材料力?或?性力?,大部分是?性的。線性力學的特性是指定一個力,就只有一种?形,這叫作唯一性定理。如果指定一個力有多於一個的?形,這就是非?性力學。這時候你的結構在多個?形中會選擇一個相對穩定的?形,而避開不穩定的?形。如何判??形的?定性的學科就叫作?性穩定學。

G.J. Simitses, An Introduction to the Elastic Stability of Structures, Prentice Hall, Inc., 1976.
In this course we will follow the textbook closely (about 70%). This textbook (250 pages) deals mostly with the stability of conservative systems in the static sense except the last chapter.

參考書:
There are five references which should supplement the textbook well. All of them can be found in the university library. All the subjects which are taken from references will be given the sources in the Outline of Topics.

1. S. P. Timoshenko, and J.M. Gere, Theory of Elastic Stability, McGraw Hill, 1961.
This is an excellent reference in elastic stability theory in the static sense. Like Timoshenko’s other mechanics monographs this book gives comprehensive and insightful coverage of the topics available at the time of writing, including columns, frames, plates, and shells. It will prove handy to own this reference on the shelf.

2. H. Ziegler, Principle of Structural Stability, Blaisdell Publishing Company, 1968.
Ziegler classified the mechanical structures into conservative, gyroscopic, dissipative, and circulatory systems. In this course we discuss the buckling of a twisted column, which is a nonservative problem and the material is taken from Chapter 5 of this small book.

3. J.M.T. Thompson and G.W. Hunt, A General Theory of Elastic Stability, John Wiley & Sons, 1973.Thompson presented a systematic approach toward the nonlinear analysis of conservative systems. Sections 1.1-1.3 are summary on various bifurcation points and limit points.

4. V.V. Bolotin, The Dynamic Stability of Elastic Systems, Holden-Day, Inc., 1964.
In this book Bolotin used Floquet theory to study the dynamic instability theory for structures under periodic loading. This is another typical nonservative system due to instationary loading. In this course we will study the case of a column under pulsating axial load.

5. V.V. Bolotin, Nonconversitive problems of the theory of Elastic Stability, Pergamon Press, 1963.
In this book Bolotin described the instability of some nonconservative systems, including follower loads, flexible shafts rotating at constant speed, and aeroelastic instability. We will introduce briefly all of these interesting topics.
